Vein Radiofrequency Ablation (ClosureFastĀ® Procedure) Q & A

What is the ClosureFast Procedure?

The ClosureFast procedure uses radiofrequency energy to treat diseased veins. During the procedure, your provider inserts a small catheter into the affected vein using ultrasound guidance. Controlled heat is delivered to the vein wall, causing it to gently collapse and seal shut. Over time, your body naturally absorbs the treated vein, and blood is safely rerouted through nearby healthy veins.

This outpatient procedure is safe, effective, and requires minimal downtime.

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins develop when the valves inside your veins weaken or fail. These valves normally keep blood flowing upward toward the heart. When they do not function properly, blood can pool in the vein, causing veins to enlarge, twist, and become visible beneath the skin. This condition is known as venous insufficiency.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins and Venous Insufficiency

You may be a candidate for vein radiofrequency ablation if you experience:

  • Leg pain, aching, throbbing, or burning

  • Swelling in the legs or ankles

  • Heavy or tired-feeling legs
  • Restless legs

  • Itching or muscle cramps

If left untreated, venous insufficiency can lead to skin discoloration, eczema-like rashes, thickened skin, and slow-healing sores near the ankles.

What should I expect during vein radiofrequency ablation?

  • The procedure typically takes about one hour

  • Performed using local anesthesia or light sedation

  • Ultrasound imaging is used for precision and safety

  • Only a tiny incision is needed—no stitches required

  • A small bandage is applied after treatment

After the procedure, you’ll wear compression stockings and can return to most normal daily activities right away. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous exercise and prolonged sitting for a short period.

Benefits of the ClosureFast Procedure?

  • Minimally invasive
  • No surgical incisions

  • Little to no downtime

  • Long-lasting symptom relief

  • Improved leg appearance and comfort
