Spider Veins Q & A

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are small, damaged veins visible just beneath the surface of the skin. They get their name because they often resemble the web-like pattern of a spider.

The root cause of spider veins is venous insufficiency, which occurs when the valves in your veins don’t function properly. Blood can flow backward and pool, causing veins to enlarge and become visible.

Spider veins commonly appear on the legs and face, though they can develop elsewhere on the body. Legs are particularly prone because blood must move upward against gravity to return to the heart.

When should I seek treatment for spider veins?

Spider veins are usually harmless and may not require treatment. However, you may want to seek care if:

  • You are bothered by the appearance of red or blue veins

  • You experience discomfort, itching, or burning in the affected area

Our vein specialists can evaluate your spider veins and recommend the best treatment plan for your health and cosmetic goals.

How are spider veins treated?

At Centers for Pain Control and Vein Care, we offer several minimally invasive options to eliminate spider veins and improve circulation. Your provider will recommend the best approach based on the location, size, and severity of your veins.

Venous ablation

Venous ablation uses radiofrequency or laser energy to close damaged veins. The treated vein collapses and is absorbed naturally by the body, while blood reroutes to nearby healthy veins. This non-surgical procedure typically requires no follow-up care.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive injection treatment. A specialized chemical agent or injectable foam, such as Varithena®, is used to irritate and collapse the damaged vein. Blood is then redirected to healthy veins, and the treated veins gradually disappear.

After treatment, your provider may recommend wearing compression stockings to improve circulation and reduce the risk of new spider veins forming.
