What to Expect During and After Radiofrequency Ablation (ClosureFast™) for Varicose Veins

What happens during the ClosureFast procedure

On the day of your procedure, wear loose, comfortable clothing and arrive at the clinic with plenty of time for check-in. We’ll answer any questions you might have and use local anesthesia and/or light sedation to help keep you comfortable during the procedure.

You lie on the procedure table with your leg positioned so we can access the vein that we’re treating. We cleanse your leg with an antiseptic solution and apply ultrasound gel. Then, we use an ultrasound device to visualize the vein and identify the exact location where to put the catheter (typically near your knee or lower leg).

We inject local anesthesia to numb your skin at the entry point, and you may feel pressure and slight stinging as the anesthetic takes effect. Once you're numb, the doctor makes a tiny puncture and carefully threads the ClosureFast catheter into the problematic vein under ultrasound guidance.

You might feel pressure as the catheter advances through the vein, but pain should be minimal because of the local anesthesia. Your provider positions the catheter at the starting point of the vein segment to be treated, then sends radiofrequency energy through the catheter.

We control the process to make sure the vein wall is heated thoroughly, without damaging surrounding tissue. You feel warmth in your leg as the heat is applied, and we slowly withdraw the catheter, continuously sending radiofrequency energy through the entire vein segment.

The procedure typically takes about 30–60 minutes, depending on the vein being treated. You remain awake and alert throughout, able to communicate with us if you experience any discomfort.

What happens after your ClosureFast procedure

Once we remove the catheter, we apply compression to the treatment area and wrap your leg with a compression bandage. The puncture hole is so small it doesn’t need stitches.

You rest briefly in recovery while medical staff monitor you. Most patients describe mild discomfort rather than actual pain after ClosureFast, and you can take over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers if needed.

Recovery at home

You go home the same day after your procedure. You can walk immediately, and we encourage walking to promote circulation. You will wear compression stockings as directed by your provider, often for one to two weeks following treatment. Most people can return to light activities the next day and resume work within days if their job doesn't require heavy lifting or prolonged standing.

Mild bruising and swelling are normal and fade over the coming weeks. You should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for one to two weeks. Avoid hot baths, saunas, and excessive heat exposure for a few days while your vein is healing.

Results and follow-up

The treated vein closes immediately, but you won't see the vein disappear right away. Your body absorbs the vein over the following weeks and months, and it will gradually fade from view. Many people see significant improvement within two to three weeks and complete resolution within several months.

You will have a follow-up appointment within one to two weeks to make sure your body is healing properly and assess your results. We use ultrasound to confirm the vein is properly closed, and we can answer any questions you might have at that time.
