CVI Leg Swelling: Lifestyle Changes and Treatment Options That Can Help
CVI leg swelling is uncomfortable, and it can put you at risk for complications like venous ulcers. Learn how to manage leg swelling with simple lifestyle changes, and find out how minimally invasive vein treatments can stop swelling at the source.

Your legs feel heavy and swollen, especially by the end of the day. Your ankles are visibly puffy, and you’ve even started noticing discoloration or skin changes on your lower legs.

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) happens when your veins aren't returning blood from your legs to your heart properly, and one of the most common symptoms is uncomfortable leg swelling. Our team at Centers for Pain Control & Vein Care in Hobart, La Porte, Merrillville, Munster, and Valparaiso, Indiana, is here to help.

CVI leg swelling is treatable, and we can recommend a combination of lifestyle changes and medical care that fits your needs. Here’s what you need to know.

Why chronic venous insufficiency causes leg swelling

Your leg veins have one-way valves that prevent blood from flowing backward as it travels upward toward your heart and against gravity. When these valves get damaged or weak, blood can start to flow backwards and pool in your legs instead of returning efficiently to your heart.

This blood pooling is what causes the swelling, heaviness, pain, and even skin changes that can come along with CVI. Anyone can develop CVI, and common causes include previous blood clots, vein damage from injury, family history of vein problems, obesity, prolonged sitting or standing, or simply aging as your veins naturally weaken over time.

Left untreated, CVI can continue to get worse since the valves in your veins can’t get stronger or start functioning properly on their own again. Over time, untreated CVI can create significant swelling and potentially lead to venous ulcers and other serious complications.

Lifestyle modifications that make a real difference for CVI swelling

The good news is that CVI is treatable, and a few simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference to decrease swelling and other bothersome symptoms.

Elevation is one of your most powerful tools. When you elevate your legs above heart level, like lying down with your legs on pillows or using a reclining chair, gravity assists blood flow back to your heart. Elevating your legs for 15-30 minutes several times daily can help manage swelling, particularly if you elevate in the evenings when CVI swelling is generally worse.

Along with incorporating elevation, modify your daily activity patterns. Avoid prolonged standing or sitting in the same position. Take regular movement breaks, because even brief walking improves circulation. When you’re sitting, elevate your feet. When you’re standing, shift your weight regularly to keep your leg muscles active.

Regular physical activity improves circulation throughout your body. Walking, swimming, or cycling strengthen your leg muscles, which act as pumps helping move blood upward. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days.

Compression stockings or support hose apply graduated pressure to your legs, squeezing fluid back toward your heart and helping prevent pooling. Wearing compression during the day, particularly if your job requires prolonged standing or sitting, can significantly reduce swelling.

Dietary changes also support vein health. Excess sodium (salt) causes fluid retention and worsens swelling, so reducing your salt intake can combat CVI symptoms. Strive to maintain a healthy weight, too. Excess weight increases pressure in your leg veins and worsens circulation.

Medical treatments for CVI leg swelling

Many people find that their leg swelling improves significantly with lifestyle modifications alone. However, if swelling persists despite consistent effort, or if your symptoms are progressively worsening, minimally invasive vein treatments can address the underlying venous disease and improve your quality of life.

At Centers for Pain Control & Vein Care, we offer a variety of treatments that safely and effectively eliminate veins that aren’t working properly, so your blood gets rerouted to healthy veins that can better handle blood flow.

VenaSeal™ uses medical adhesive to permanently seal problematic veins. Varithena™ foam sclerotherapy injects medication that makes damaged veins collapse and close. Endovenous ablation uses radiofrequency (RF) or laser energy to heat and close the problematic veins, and ambulatory phlebectomy removes varicose veins through tiny incisions.

These options are all minimally invasive, and don’t require long recovery periods. Most people experience significant swelling reduction within weeks as circulation normalizes, so you don’t have to accept leg swelling as something you must live with.
